'American Idol' Runner-Up La'Porsha Renae Says LGBT Comments Got 'Twisted Up' in Interview

'American Idol' Runner-Up La'Porsha Renae Says LGBT Comments Got 'Twisted Up' in Interview

La'Porsha Renae performs on American Idol on Wednesday, April 6, 2016

American Idol season 15 runner-up La'Porsha Renae took to Periscope to clarify remarks she made about the LGBT community in a post-show interview.

Speaking to reporters on a conference call Friday (April 8), Renae was asked if she was following the anti-LGBT bill that had been passed into law in her home state of Mississippi. Renae responded with "they are people just like us...They’re people with feelings. Although all of us may not agree with that particular lifestyle for religious reasons -- whatever the reason is. You still treat each other with respect. Everybody is a human being. We should be able to coexist with one another. I am one of the people who don’t really agree with that lifestyle. I wasn’t brought up that way, it wasn’t how I was raised."

"But I do have a lot of friends and a lot of people that I love dearly who are gay and homosexual, and they’re such sweet, nice people," she continued. "We should just respect each other’s differences and opinions and move on."

Her initial comments sparked a firestorm on social media, prompting a swift response from the 22-year old singer, who said she "didn't mean to hurt anyone."

"I tried to be as open and honest and neutral as possible, but that’s the way interviews go. Sometimes when you do interviews, it gets twisted up,” she said. “I can understand when I read it back why people were offended, and for that I deeply apologize. I wasn’t trying to offend anyone. I was just trying to honestly answer a question that caught me off guard. It was supposed to be an interview about singing, and it became political and I’m not a political person at all.”

Renae also showed support for fellow Mississippi native and Idol winner Trent Harmon. Both singers are now signed to Big Machine Records.

"Us both coming from Mississippi, I just wanted both of us to have a chance, and both of us did get a chance," she said.

Renae, who is the first artist signed to the Big Machine Records/Motown label, told Billboard in a post-show conference that she wants to be an "artist of truth."

Rolling Stones Plan to Release New Album This Year

Rolling Stones Plan to Release New Album This Year

Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger, Charlie Watts and Keith Richards of the
Rolling Stones perform at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on
Saturday, July 4, 2015 in Indianapolis.

The British rockers last released a studio album in 2005.

The Rolling Stones are planning to release a new album, possibly this year, guitarist Ronnie Wood said Monday.

The British rockers last released a studio album in 2005, but Wood said they have been in the studio and recorded some new material and some blues covers.

"We went in to cut some new songs, which we did," the 68-year-old Wood said. "But we got on a blues streak. We cut 11 blues in two days.

"They are extremely great cover versions of Howlin' Wolf and Little Walter, among other blues people. But they really sound authentic."

When asked when the new material would be released, Wood said only: "This year."

"When we heard them back after not hearing them for a couple of months, we were, 'Who's that? It's you,'" Wood said. "It sounded so authentic."

The Rolling Stones, which started as a blues band in 1962, just wrapped a tour of Latin America with a free show in Cuba on March 25. The band then headed to London for Monday's opening of "Exhibitionism," a vast exhibition of the group's history at the Saatchi Gallery.

Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts and Wood arrived together at the gallery, but Richards wouldn't go into any detail on the recent recording sessions.

"There's one coming," the 72-year-old guitarist said of a new album. "I can't say no more. My lips are sealed."

The Stones have released 22 studio albums in Britain and 24 in the United States. A Bigger Bang was the last, and the band toured the album in 2005, '06 and '07.

They resumed touring in 2012 to mark the band's 50th anniversary, but have only released a couple of new songs since then.

"We're a working band," Wood said. "We'll be working again before the end of the year."

Gato Barbieri, Latin Jazz Saxophonist, Dies at Age 83

Gato Barbieri, Latin Jazz Saxophonist, Dies at Age 83

Jazz saxophonist Gato Barbieri at The Friends Of Chile Benefit
Concert at the Felt Forum at Madison Square Garden on May 9, 1974.

Latin Jazz saxophonist Leandro "Gato" Barbieri, who composed the Grammy-winning music for the steamy Marlon Brando film Last Tango in Paris and recorded dozens of albums over a career spanning more than seven decades, has died at age 83.

Laura Barbieri, his wife of nearly 20 years, said her husband died Saturday in a New York hospital from pneumonia. The musician recently had bypass surgery to remove a blood clot.
"Music was a mystery to Gato, and each time he played was a new experience for him, and he wanted it to be that way for his audience," she said. "He was honored for all the years he had a chance to bring his music all around the world."

The Argentine-born musician recorded some 35 albums between 1967 and 1982, when he stopped consistently making new records. He toured regularly and went on to record four more albums, including 1997's smooth jazz "Que Pasa," which reached No. 2 on Billboard's contemporary jazz charts.

Though in poor health, Barbieri, still sporting his trademark black fedora hat, had been performing monthly at the Blue Note jazz club in New York since 2013. He last performed at the club on Nov. 23.

"He was my best friend," Laura Barbieri said Saturday. "I'm so grateful we had these 20 years together." She said a public memorial was being planned, but details have not been finalized.
Last year, Barbieri received a Latin Grammy lifetime achievement award for a career that covered "virtually the entire jazz landscape."

The citation from the Latin Recording Academy credited Barbieri with creating "a rebellious but highly accessible musical style, combining contemporary jazz with Latin American genres and incorporating elements of instrumental pop."

Barbieri won a Grammy for best instrumental composition in 1973 for his music for Last Tango In Paris, the controversial erotic drama starring Marlon Brando and Maria Schneider that earned two Oscar nominations.

When director Bernardo Bertolucci needed sexy music for Last Tango, he turned to Barbieri who was known for his distinctive, sensuous, huge-toned tenor sax sound.

"It was like a marriage between the film and the music," said Barbieri of the soundtrack that made him an international star, in a 1997 interview with The Associated Press. "Bernardo told me, 'I don't want the music to be too much Hollywood or too much European, which is more intellectual. I want a median.'"

Barbieri said tango had a special appeal because it is deeply tied to his Argentine soul.

"Always in the tango is tragedy — she leaves him, she kills him. It's like an opera but it's called tango," Barbieri said in 1997, noting that half of Argentinians, including him, had roots in Italy. "The lyrics and the melodies are very beautiful. It's very sensual."

Born on Nov. 28, 1932, in Rosario, Argentina, Barbieri grew up in a family that included several musicians, but did not take up an instrument until he was 12 when he heard bebop pioneer Charlie Parker's recording of "Now's the Time" and began studying clarinet.

After moving to Buenos Aires in 1947, Barbieri picked up the alto saxophone. He earned the nickname "El Gato," which means "The Cat," in the 1950s because of the way he scampered between clubs with his saxophone.

He gained national prominence playing alto saxophone in an orchestra led by Lalo Schifrin, the pianist and composer who later made a big impact with his TV and film scores, including "Theme from Mission: Impossible."

Later in the 1950s, Barbieri switched to tenor saxophone as he began leading his own groups.

In the 1960s, splitting his time between Rome and New York, Barbieri became part of the Ornette Coleman-inspired free jazz revolution, working extensively with trumpeter Don Cherry from Coleman's groundbreaking quartet. Influenced by other modern jazz saxophonists — including John Coltrane, Albert Ayler and Pharoah Sanders — he developed a warmer, grittier sound on the tenor sax. He recorded and performed with such avant-garde jazz musicians as Cherry, Carla Bley and Mike Mantler.

But he soon rediscovered his roots, incorporating South American rhythms, harmonies and melodic themes on albums starting with The Third World in 1969 — and eventually developed his own contemporary jazz sound. He followed that with the live album El Pampero in 1971.

After releasing the Last Tango album in 1972, Barbieri signed with the Impulse! label, releasing a series of mellower Latin-infused soul-jazz and jazz-pop albums, including Caliente! (1976), which included his rendition of Carlos Santana's "Europa," and four Chapter albums, which explored Brazilian, Afro-Cuban and Argentine rhythms.

Barbieri recorded new material consistently until 1982, when a dispute with his record label led him to focus solely on touring. He recorded only intermittently in the 1980s, and did not release any albums from 1988-97. He released Que Pasa in 1997 after dealing with the turmoil of losing his Italian-born wife of 35 years to a degenerative illness in January 1995, and then undergoing triple bypass heart surgery two months later.

He had to recover physically and overcome depression at the death of his wife to finish the album, which he credited with being a healing force.

"The only way I saw was to go out and do something every day," he said. "The music gave me life."

Barbieri would release only three more albums over the rest of his life — including The Shadow of the Cat in 2002, a Latin-flavored smooth jazz session featuring guest trumpeter Herb Alpert, and New York Meeting in 2010 on which he played straight-ahead jazz standards, such as Thelonious Monk's "Straight, No Chaser" and Miles Davis' "So What."

Barbieri married again in 1996 and had a son, Christian, who turns 18 on Sunday. Besides his wife and son, he is survived by his sister Raquel Barbieri, who lives in Buenos Aires.

In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be sent to The Reciprocity Foundation, a nonprofit that works to help homeless and foster youth in New York City.

Van Stone's Out of Africa Into World Geography: Afro-Colombian Children And Colombian Children Cope With Displacement, Depression, Scar, Below Poverty, Victims Of War, No Community Service, in Bogota Colombia Areas Special News Report

Van Stone's Out of Africa Into World Geography: Afro-Colombian Children And Colombian Children Cope With Displacement, Depression, Scar, Below Poverty, Victims Of War, No Community Service, in Bogota Colombia Areas Special News Report

BOGOTA (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Some children have recurring nightmares and constant anxiety, others suffer from insomnia and low self-esteem, and find it hard to interact with their peers. Other children, wounded by landmines, have had limbs amputated or are blind.

These are the mental and physical scars inflicted on children during Colombia’s 50-year-old war, according to a joint study released earlier this month by Colombia’s child protection agency (ICBF), the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF).

Decades of fighting between the government, leftist guerrillas and right-wing paramilitary groups have killed at least 220,000 people and forced about 5 million Colombians, half of them children, to leave their homes, according to government figures.

The report examined the impact of Colombia’s conflict on 1,681 children, of whom 961 were direct victims of violence and human rights abuses, including sexual violence, forced displacement, kidnapping, forced recruitment by armed groups, the loss of a parent who was murdered or disappeared and injuries caused by landmines and improvised explosive devices.

Based on interviews with children aged between 8 and 18 from different ethnic groups, including indigenous and Afro-Colombian boys and girls, the report found more needs to be done to carry out policies tailored to help children with war-related trauma, based on their gender, the type of violence they have suffered, their ethnicity and level of education.

“The study will allow us to use information that can guide us to differentiate psycho
social services provided to boys, girls and adolescents according to how they have been affected (by the conflict) and the ethnic group to which they belong,” Katie Kerr, IOM’s head of programmes in Colombia, said in a statement.

“There are important and significant differences that shed light on the psycho social needs of children.”
Understanding the different ways in which children are affected by the war is a key part of rehabilitating war victims and promoting reconciliation among Colombians as peace talks between the government and FARC rebels continue in Cuba, experts say.

IMPACT ON CHILD SOLDIERS
The report found former child soldiers surveyed are more likely to feel guilt and to blame themselves for the violence they have witnessed or committed. They also tend to be more aggressive when compared with children who have suffered other types of war-related violence. But they are more likely to have better coping skills and be more resilient, the report said.

Colombia’s largest guerrilla group, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC), recruits more children into its ranks than any other illegal armed group and drug-running criminal gang in the country, the report said.

Boys and girls, usually aged between 15 and 17, living in border and southern provinces where fighting between rebels and government forces is most intense, are most at risk of forced recruitment, the report said.

From 1999 to January this year, 5,252 former child soldiers entered government-run foster homes and reintegration programmes, according to Colombia’s child protection agency ICBF. The report, which will be released in full early next year, found former child soldiers feel stigmatized and discriminated against by society because of their past and find it hard to get jobs.

ORPHANS
Children whose mothers have been killed or gone missing are more likely to be depressed, suffer anxiety and blame themselves for the violence they have experienced.

“They also show significant difficulty with social skills, such as helping and trusting others and being nice,” the report said.

DISPLACED CHILDREN
Families flee their homes to stop their children being recruited into rebel groups and criminal gangs or because of direct and or indirect death threats issued by armed groups. Many are driven from their land and homes in the countryside and seek refuge in urban slum areas.

“Boys, girls and adolescents who have been displaced show more signs of being withdrawn, not being able to sleep well, anxiety and attention disorders in comparison to the general population,” the report said.
Displaced children are also more likely to be underweight for their age, have fewer years of schooling and find it difficult to envisage a positive future for themselves, the report said.

Ex-Musician Sues The Monkees for Discrimination, Wrongful Termination

Ex-Musician Sues The Monkees for Discrimination, Wrongful Termination

An ex-musician for The Monkees says she was fired in a four-minute phone call after playing with the band for nearly 20 years and later was told it was because she didn't look good onstage, according to a lawsuit filed in Los Angeles County Superior Court on Friday (April 1).

Aviva Maloney is suing Micky Dolenz and Peter Tork -- two founding members of The Monkees -- Warner Music Group and others involved with the band's tours for discrimination, harassment, retaliation, failure to accommodate disability and wrongful termination, among other claims.

Maloney, 57, plays saxophone, clarinet, keyboards and other instruments and says she was the first female member of the band when she joined the other members on their 30th Anniversary Tour in 1996.
She says she's been described as Davy Jones' best friend, and after his death in 2012, defendants gradually reduced her role in the band "because of her legally protected characteristics," including her age, sex and disabilities.

A few days after she was fired in 2015 by musical director Wayne Avers, Maloney claims Tork told her husband that she should join Overeaters Anonymous because she was eating to resolve emotional problems and didn't look good onstage. She claims Tork also complained that she didn't wear makeup onstage and had fallen asleep at rehearsal.

Maloney says she was diagnosed with lupus, which causes fatigue, and rheumatoid arthritis in 2003, and the defendants knew of her illnesses because they were like family.

"Defendants failed to recognize that Plaintiff's falling asleep at a rehearsal, if it happened, may have been a symptom of her disabilities, warranting reasonable accommodation," states the lawsuit.

Her replacement is a woman under 40 years of age with no real or imagined disabilities, according to the complaint, which Maloney says is proof she was fired in substantial part because of her illness and age.

Additionally, Maloney claims the defendants intentionally misclassified her as an exempt employee to avoid paying overtime, and she wasn't paid what she was owed at the time she was fired.

She's suing for restitution, past and future lost wages and statutory and punitive damages.
Representatives of the band and WMG have not yet commented on the lawsuit.
