In America, the term grant master is loosely used. When a person is a "grand master” that means that their skill level is far above the rest.

I sometimes go to martial arts award ceremonies and banquet gatherings and term is used there.

There may be more grand masters at these functions than in all Japan.

I have been studying for sixty years and I don’t consider myself a grand master but many of my
colleagues refer to me as a grand master.

I must admit that it feels good to hear colleagues giving me that honor.

The truth of the matter is that most of them never saw a real grand master.

Let me give you an example of a skilled master.

When I was stationed at Marine Air Station, Iwakuni Japan 1957, the judo club would practice in the gym’s boxing ring.

I had a friend of mine in the navy named, Davis, a 2nd degree black.  His teacher was Mr. Nakano, a 9th degree black belt.

David had been training about four years and never was able to throw Mr. Nakano. One day he did and in his excitement, he laughed. He didn’t mean any harm but he was just excited.

Now this is a different time era; to laugh at your instructor was a no no, a sign of disrespect.

Mr. Nakano got back on his feet smiled and politely bowed for Davis to continue.

In that style of Judo there were 51 different throws. Mr. Nakano proceeded to throw Davis 51 times and never the same throw.

Now that’s old school. Mr. Nakano at his skill level didn’t consider himself a grand master. 

A grand master is the best of the best. Their skill level is mind boggling. Most of them go way past the physical. They usually keep away from the public eye.

These great path-makers of the martial arts are too busy taking their training to the next level. 

The highest rank in the Japanese martial arts system is a 10th degree title, Hanshi “Teacher of Teachers”.

The term grand master is a generic term used mostly in the United States.

I knew Mr. Nakano personally; I had many conversations with him. He would talk about the great masters of old.

I was young and asked many questioned every time I got a chance to talk to these great legends.

Twenty years later, I went back to Japan for advanced training... I looked them up again; Mr. Nakano was included in my list of names.

My question was “Could you control and move someone without touching them?" I was all over the place talking to all masters that I could muster.

They all led me to the same person and I knew him. I met with him and he told me what I wanted to know.

Wu-Tang Clan, Charles Bradley & Mac Dre Light Up 'Kicks' Soundtrack: Exclusive

   

The music of Wu-Tang Clan, Mac Dre, Charles Bradley, and Iamsu! fills the soundtrack for Kicks, an urban coming-of-age tale about a 15-year-old boy who tries to recover his hard-earned pair of vintage Air Jordans after they are stolen.

Kicks, which marks the feature film debut by Justin Tipping and stars Jahking Guillory, Christopher Meyer and Notorious B.I.G.’s son, Christopher Jordan Wallace, received strong reviews following its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival this spring. The Focus World film opens Sept. 9, the same day the digital and physical version of the score come out on Backlot Music.

Set in the San Francisco Bay Area, the film features music from local artists, including Roach Gigz, Dave Steezy, and NanosauR, as well as the late Dre and Iamsu!. The movie’s composer, Brian Reitzell, is also from the area.

“I always knew I wanted to weave an eclectic soundtrack together that intertwined hip-hop and sweeping score to reflect the Bay Area sound, as well as the world inside the characters’ imagination,” said Tipping in a statement. “With so many genres mashed up together…Brian created a sonic through line that elevated the story to an entirely new level.”

“We wanted the score to connect with the source music sonically,” added Reitzell. “I think that when you do that, the music as a whole -- both songs and score -- make for a more immersive/connective experience.” The connection is evident in the beat-heavy track, “606 In The 510,” from Reitzell’s score, which debuts below.
 
The soundtrack, which will also come out on vinyl later this year, features previously unreleased tracks from Nanosaur, Jay Casio and Reitzell, as well as two dialogue interludes set to lyrics from Notorious B.I.G.’s 1993 single “Party and Bullshit.”

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania. (Philadelphia Front Page News-Magazine) — 77-year-old Floyd Smith Sr. loved Muhammad Ali as a good brother and dear friend.


Many people may not understand that Muhammad Ali experienced Japanese Martial Arts as a fan and an eye witness because there were close friendships between Ali and martial arts Sensei’s such as Floyd Smith Jr., Grand Master, Karate.

No one has to take Floyd Smith Sr. to a boxing museum or show him a piece of memorabilia that features
Muhammed Ali. Smith Sr. knows the story that may go along with these types of things.

Floyd Smith and Muhammed Ali met early hours of the morning as jogging partners when Ali boxed before the George Foreman bout.

Smith Sr. has a few young Ali and young Smith collection of sports and personal friendship memorabilia in his home.

“I have a few pictures, an autograph here and there, and a lot of good Ali and me memories to share,” said Smith.

Floyd Smith Sr. had known Ali since Smith Sr. trained for martial arts competition fights and taught martial arts school students.

Fights from Ali's career after his return in 1970 were just as endearing to Smith Sr. as they were to Ali’s very close family and long list of personal friends.

The Ali fight period from 1971 up until 1974 was a special time in Smith Jr’s life to be an associate with the sports legends who knew the “greatest fighter of all time.”

“When I was in Ali’s company during our early morning running routines I talked with him for hours at a time,” said Smith Sr. 

Smith Jr. will tell anyone that they shared some quiet moments. Smith Jr says he shared thoughts and exchanged ideas with Ali, and even attended several meets with the Ali family.

With Ali’s passing it’s very easy for Smith Jr. to say wonderful and endearing things about Ali. He feels that there is always a good time to talk praise about the Ali the man who watched martial arts up and close.

Floyd Smith Sr. is the founder of several self-defense activities and martial arts schooling in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Most recently Smith Sr. can be found at the Marian Anderson Recreation Center, 17^th and Catherine Street continuing Black Martial Artist education.
