Phillies’ J.T. Realmuto puts skill, durability on display in World Series comeback.

 

The foul tip staggered J.T. Realmuto, careening off his jaw, sending his mask flying, knocking him backward.

“You all right?” plate umpire James Hoye asked the Phillies' catcher. “Stay there a minute.”

Phillies manager Rob Thomson and head athletic trainer Paul Buchheit raced to home plate to check on Realmuto. The score was tied, 5-5, with two outs in the sixth inning in Game 1 of the World Series. Watching from the dugout, Phillies backup catcher Garrett Stubbs never even considered the possibility he might enter the game.

“I didn’t move,” Stubbs said. “That guy’s not coming out for anything.”

Realmuto, 31, already had produced one of the biggest hits of the night, a two-run double off Justin Verlander that tied the score in the fifth inning, completing the Phillies’ comeback from a 5-0 deficit. Little did anyone know, he would deliver an even bigger hit later, in his 145th game as a catcher this season and 151st overall, including the playoffs.

At the moment, Realmuto just needed to collect himself after getting nailed by Chas McCormick’s foul tip.

“Honestly, my head wasn’t the problem. It just smoked my jaw pretty good,” Realmuto said. “It’s probably not going to be very easy for me to eat dinner tonight, but as long as my head’s OK, I’ll be good to go.”

Such is life for a major-league catcher. Realmuto, though, is not just any catcher. He is the most durable. The most athletic. The best baserunner and best thrower. And now, the hero of a classic World Series game.

Realmuto’s leadoff home run off the Astros' Luis Garcia in the 10th inning gave the Phillies the lead. He then caught the final three outs of a 6-5 victory that shattered the Astros’ air of invincibility and signaled that the Phils indeed might be capable of pulling off one of the bigger upsets in Series history.

His dinner went down easy, even if chewing was hard.

On May 22, Realmuto was batting .224 with a .613 OPS. Slogging through the second year of a five-year, $115.5 million contract, it appeared he might become the latest example of a catcher who starts to fade in his early 30s.

As it turned out, any such judgment was premature.

Realmuto ended up batting .276 with an .820 OPS. His 22 homers and 21 stolen bases made him only the second catcher to produce a 20-20 season, after Ivan Rodriguez in 1999. His offensive production, when adjusted to his park and league, was the best of his career. He likely will be a top 10 finisher in the National League MVP balloting based upon his regular-season performance, maybe even a top five.

“Joe Mauer and Buster Posey are probably the best comps for J.T.,” said Phillies pitcher Kyle Gibson, referring to two retired catchers, one of whom was his former teammate with the Twins. “But in the game right now, there’s nobody.”

By the time Mauer was Realmuto’s age, his time as a catcher had ended because of a concussion. Posey won three World Series with the Giants and for his career threw out 33 percent of runners attempting to steal. Realmuto’s career rate is 36 percent, including a league-best 44 percent this season. One more interesting comparison: Posey stole 23 bases in his career. Realmuto stole 21 in 22 attempts this season, finally getting thrown out by the Astros’ Martin Maldonado on the next-to-last day of the season.

Rounding the bases after his homer, he said all he could think about was that the Phillies needed three more outs, against the heart of the Astros’ order.
The home run was his third of the postseason; his first, in Game 4 of the Division Series against the Braves, was historic in its own right, the first inside-the-park homer by a catcher in the postseason. His shot off Garcia was of the more traditional variety, and it reminded Gibson of the opposite-field homer Realmuto hit off Gregory Soto in last year’s All-Star Game at Coors Field.

“When he’s going good, he’s got some real juice to right field,” Gibson said. “When he’s doing that, it’s a good sign.”

Realmuto has now reached safely in 11 of the Phillies’ 12 postseason games, batting .267 with an .842 OPS. He also excelled behind the plate in Game 1, guiding the Phillies’ bullpen through 5 2/3 scoreless innings, and nearly throwing out Jose Altuve attempting to steal second in the bottom of the ninth. The Phillies challenged the safe call, but the ruling was upheld. Right fielder Nick Castellanos made a diving catch on the next batter, Jeremy Pena, robbing the Astros of a potential walk-off hit.

“Dang it,” Hoskins thought, watching the ball in the air.

The next plate appearance of the game was Realmuto’s homer. Stunning as it was, the Phillies almost have come to expect as much from their catcher, even as he absorbs foul tip after foul tip, plays inning after inning, game after game. “I don’t think any of us are shocked,” Harper said. “He’s not just a catcher. He’s an athlete.”

And, of course, as tough as they come. Stubbs, seeing Realmuto take the blow to his jaw in the sixth, was unfazed. He knew his fellow catcher just needed a moment to recover.

“Unless he’s missing an arm, that guy is in the game and he’s going to be grinding out all nine innings, or plus,” Stubbs said.

Friday night it was plus. And Realmuto still had something more to give.

Phillies fever is spreading happiness across the region. It's something we can all agree on, it doesn't matter about your political party, how much money you have, or where you live, for now, these precious next couple of weeks we're all part of Phillies nation. 

Phillies euphoria is sweeping the Delaware Valley. 

"I'm so happy," one Phillies fan said. 

Phillies fans are ecstatic and the joy is spreading. I spoke with a therapist at Counsel for Relationships. 

"Part of it is we resonate off of other people's energy, right? You can tell when someone is being really negative and down. Sometimes that can impact you. But when you're around other people who are being positive or affirming you, or happy, that energy becomes something that we feed off of," George James said. 

James said he believes happiness is contagious and the excitement surrounding the Phils is far-reaching. 

"It's not just about baseball. It's about it's about joy. It's about winning. It's about people being in good spirits," James said. 

There's even some research that shows winning increases testosterone, which boosts dopamine, a feel-good chemical in the brain. 

The Phillies' NLCS win couldn't come at a better time, with all the political discord, gun violence and economic woes, it's nice to have a break from all the serious issues.

"Sometimes we need healthy escapes. Right things that can allow us to just take a pause or timeout from some of the things," James said. 

Like Rocky, fighting obstacles, the Phillies have delivered a big dose of love, not just to their fans, but to a community, that's seen its share of hard times. 

"It's something that people will talk about for years and generations to come. And it becomes a family story. And that is also what makes people feel good and happy and for a moment, move away from some of the difficulties they're facing," James said. 

Philadelphia sports fans are intense and sometimes we get a bad rap, but for now, it's about embracing the team and sharing the excitement of the World Series.

The Philadelphia Phillies retook the series lead in the NLCS against the San Diego Padres, winning 4-2 Friday night in the first NLCS game at Citizens Bank Park since Oct. 23, 2010. Much to the delight of the 45,279 fans packed into Citizens Bank Park, the Phillies prevailed in an entertaining game from start to finish.

The Phillies, who got a six-out save from closer Serantony Domínguez, now have a 2-1 lead in the best-of-seven National League Championship Series.

Where in Philly Is Roger Robbie “the Hip Hop Raccoon?" is an American Arts  television show, print show and radio show series based on a collaboration of educational children’s value posters, educational children’s superhero coloring books, and educational policy and the arts readers websites. 

The children’s value posters and books were created by Herb Rogers Jr., Educator and Robert L. Jefferson, Sr., Artist and was originally promoted from 1992 to 2006; the superhero coloring books and shows and websites were produced by Van Stone of the Van Stone Productions Foundation, Inc., and originally aired from 1997 to present, on Saturday mornings during its WVSR1360.1 FM Kids broadcasting block; with the Philadelphia Front Page News, online newspaper. 

The series won a Philadelphia City Council Award for Children’s Educational Learning and Educational Art in 1994, and has had several spin-off series. The series won Philadelphia City Council over once again for its promotional campaigns about reducing gun violence; beginning in 2002 Roger Robbie was spun-off from being a lovable family raccoon fighting for better education within the school culture into being a lovable action and adventure raccoon fighting for better violence reduction within the hip hop culture. 

“Any Roger Robbie reading material was redesigned to be a pet-book,” says Stone.

“Because Roger Robbie superhero ability is he has the super power to disguise as domestic or wild animals that are nearly his size.”

“RR could become a cat, a dog, or even a mid-size wild animal, said Stone.”   

Stone enjoys promoting more book reading when kids are really young. Children may begin to understand a few more things about books at an early age.

“That’s just because not all animals may be safe as pets.”  “It’s the animal literature that can and will make a book a pet; and kids will keep books for their own safe keeping,” he said.    

‘Roger Robbie and Friends’ – ‘Superheroes, U7 and the Heroes of the Last Q,’ was its first spin-off from the Rogers Jr. and Jefferson, Sr. series of posters and books about Roger Robbie; ‘RR’ the Hip Hop Raccoon and superhero U7 and their Heroes of the Last Q friends is adventure comic strips, comic books and novel collectables.

Van Stone has used hip hop themes to write more about Roger Robbie since 1994.

‘Where in Philly Is RR’ is a second spin-off.  The radio segment and the website about where in Philly is Roger Robbie are a promotion for anti-gun violence.

There are more items that have been developed making them a third Roger Robbie spin-off.

Here are some of the most recent items about Roger Robbie; RR mascot costumes about sports, RR illustrations drawn in posters and books as a target for readers to find; and RR special guest appearances with his music DJ at events including schools, clubs and social gatherings.

“The RR website is part of my dedication and tribute to both Herb Rogers, Jr. and Robert L. Jefferson,” says Van Stone.  

“I never met Mr. Jefferson. But Mr. Rogers was my mentor; I was his protégé,” says Stone.

“He designed, produced and wrote books. I did those things, too.” 

But designing, producing and book writing drove home the point that in the larger scheme of things, mentor and protégé were more alike than different. 

Rogers Jr. most cherished experience was teaching an all-boys class at the Alain Locke School for their first and second grades in 1968. A full-page story was dedicated to that experiment nearly twenty-seven years later in the Philadelphia Inquirer.  

Rogers had begun a search for his ‘boys from room 109.’ The boys were students that had attended the Alain Locke Elementary located in West Philly.

Twenty-eight of the 34 boys in the class graduated from high school, with 16 going on to college; I said he would be a teacher that I would always remember,” says Stone.

“Then, lo and behold, he turned up in the Inquirer looking for me after all those years.” 

Rogers Jr. and Robert L. Jefferson, Sr., two people who have told stories in which animals act in human-like ways, had made an agreement to name their lovable raccoon character after themselves.

Roger, was his given first name, named after Rogers Jr., and Robbie, was his last given name, named after Robert; this is how Roger Robbie was born.       

Roger Robbie, however, is a fictional character from a children’s books, “Roger Robbie and the Backward ABC’s” and “Roger Robbie Discovers Dr. J’s Secrets,” written by Herb Rogers, Jr. and illustrated by Robert L. Jefferson, Sr. 

These are stories too are about how an unusual and marginalized character learns about letter values.

These stories are also about a legendary athletic sports star’s secrets.

They are also about light and playful story telling set across Philadelphia, Pennsylvania as imagined and told by Roger Robbie himself. 

These books are the perfect introduction to positive values for 3–9-year-olds, but the illustrations and playful rhyming text will delight people of all ages; especially those who love Philly.  

“The character is affectionately known as the Hip Hop raccoon. That is also the perfect way to make an introduction about the Hip Hop culture,” Stone said.  

With most teens being familiar with Hip Hop, youth may take the rhythm book combination to the next level.

Robert L. Jefferson, Sr, was a masterly artist and former image creator (1929-2014). Herbert Rogers Jr., was a longtime educator and former principal (1932-2017); amazingly, both exemplary men of the arts died when they were 85. 

Van Stone, author and creator, has lots of fun promoting Roger Robbie as the raccoon hip hops his way across Philly and elsewhere.  

“Campaigning about education, campaigning about policy and the arts, and campaigning about reducing gun violence, is what I hope you’re gonna have lots of fun doing, too,” says Stone. 

Promoting anti-violence and anti-gun violence is what Roger Robbie does all throughout the town.

“Everyone just has to try and find RR,” says Stone. “Where is Roger Robbie in your home town?”

Philadelphia Front Page News - The Birds are 6-0 winning against the Cowboys 26 to 17

The Philadelphia Eagles are 6-0 after defeating the Dallas Cowboys at Lincoln Financial Field! Final score: 26 to 17.

It looked like this game was going to be an easy one for the Birds as they jumped out to a 20 to 0 lead. The offense scored on four of their first five drives and the defense came away with two picks, one by C.J. Gardner-Johnson (via James Bradberry tip drill) and another by Darius Slay.

But then a long kickoff return by Dallas at the end of the first half set the Cowboys up for three points. That score combined with Lane Johnson being ruled out of the game saw the momentum shift in the Cowboys’ favor. Dallas made it a three-point game early in the fourth quarter.

It was the Birds who then answered with a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive to extend the lead back to two possessions. CJGJ made an impressive diving pick not too long after that score to really give the Eagles control of the game again.

Though it wasn’t as pretty as it could’ve been for the Eagles, this was a HUGE win. Dropping the Cowboys to 4-2 while advancing to 6-0 is a big deal. Philly clearly stands alone as the top team in not only the NFC East but the entire NFC.

Next up for the Eagles is … their bye week! They’ll return to action when they host the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 8. One would think Johnson could be back by then.

Day and night poetry is a lifesaver for many, especially during the height of the pandemic; and after the height of COVID has gone.

Diamond Hill discovered poetry writing and speaking through personal concentration and thought-provoking meditation; she began to share poems with others hoping that they too would discover what the wonder of poetry can do.

Poetry writing gave Hill a creative skill; to help many gather around one another, to look forward to reading more regularly, and when everything else in life seemed shut down, to keep hope.

The Philadelphia Front Page News has once again returned to its business of online publishing after the last two years pandemic shutdown has passed. Since then, Hill has become one of the many poets discovered by the paper who is able to help lead poetry lovers back to the meaning of the way of finding great poetry.

As a freelance poet, Diamond Hill writes new poems for whichever company has need of her services at a particular time, rather than being employed by just one.

Councilwoman Jannie Blackwell knows all about the final bell rings! That bell could mean defend a community or school’s out for the day!

Blackwell, a former schoolteacher, also knows well that when a community need defending or once school day ends two out of three kids are somewhere in the street without nutritious snack. 

"Roger Robbie, the Hip-Hop Raccoon," the universal education mascot, knows that kids struggling in a big city like Philadelphia don’t have parents to give them money to eat snack at home, using the vending machine, or at the nearest convenience store. So, Philadelphia kids as a whole face hustling drugs and carrying guns to get snack. And when some kids avoid trouble and crimes, they are still caught up in snack time that is just not cool to eat in the street. 

Blackwell knows about kids secretly eating foods their parents never let them have. Blackwell wants kids to know what snacks are for them. 

Roger Robbie and Superhero Friends "Heroes of The Last Q" realize that lots of kids do know what snacks are good for them.

Roger Robbie and real-life heroes like Julius "Dr. J." Erving, the basketball legend is preparing for the month of September to be sure that kids in councilwoman Blackwell’s district are thinking of snacking on mini-meals that include nutritious "Street" Breakfast, Lunch and Snack (B.L.S). Ordering a "Street" B.L.S. means having Milk, Cheese, Yogurt, Lean Deli Meat, Beans Dip, Fresh Fruit, Fruit Juice, Salad, Vegetable Soup, Raw Veggies, Waffles, Muffins, Cookies, Ice Cream, Chicken, Popcorn, Cereal Crunchies, Pita Bread and even Hot Breakfast. 

But how so? 

The creator of Roger Robbie and Friends are seeking assistance in Jannie Blackwell’s district because not only has "Street Credibility" become a way of life for many busy families in Philly but "Street Nutrition" takes the place of busy schedules that often don’t leave time for a traditional meal. 

"Street Credibility" means solutions to stopping the youth violence dealing with kids ages 5 years-old to 17 years-old. "Street Nutrition" means solutions to stopping the youth violence dealing with the same age group of kids but especially the after-school program that is set up without nutritious snack. 

In fact, Roger Robbie’s creator is looking more closely at neighborhoods that set up some form of after-school program where there is no snack, like say at the local library, or communities that have no after-school program at all. 

Big money is spent on snack food. 

Today, although families in Philly must work at least 2 jobs to remain at the poverty level, Americans spend $13.4 billion a year on snack foods. 

In Philly, kids don’t have money for clothes and a list of healthy groceries but they do find money to buy snack. 

If Roger Robbie and Friends can get the Old Country Buffet to meet halfway using the "Power Snack" program designed to help kids who are in the street they are full of hope that support in the West Philadelphia area will arrive to complete the other half for snack. 

Lewis Harris Jr. is working on a Dept. of Recreation revival, Home-Schools Connective, and Crime and Public Safety revival in Philadelphia. 

Harris Jr. as of late fought hard to keep certain Philadelphia public schools open as a good platform to help the business community. 

Job opportunities revival is what folks of all races want to hear and see Harris Jr. do as something fresh. Harris Jr. issues about education is key to neighborhood representation. 

We can see that political committee party representation is not what it used to be. 

Today in Philadelphia, political committee party representation doesn’t seem to have the empowerment to save schools. Perhaps, Businessmen like Lewis Harris Jr. can make a difference.
