The Young Poet Teaya Tells Her Backstory And More In Philadelphia

While poet Teaya Downing obviously comes from a deeply personal place when writing her poetry, the twenty five year-old mother of one richly rewards readers with joy while coping with life and relationships. For Teaya writing unspoken word results in helping the emergence from times of old days to times of new days. Downing realizes that using individual poetry to touch on universally shared pursuit of self-identity and belonging is an excellent way to share her own story about a Philadelphia experience and more. The Philadelphia Front Page News had a recent interview with Teaya. 

Philadelphia Front Page News: Q. What inspires you to write poetry?

Teaya Downing: A. I'm inspired by listening to music, observing all types of relationships, and walking though different neighborhoods. Inspiration is naturally everywhere, all places. I find myself dissecting the unspoken communication in life and that keeps me going.

PFPN: Q. Can you tell your fans your backstory?

Teaya: A. I was born and raised in Philly from a family that bond for, holidays, weekends, and worship God together. My mom and dad split, and it was time for me to stand up and fight for love. I was abused. It traumatized me as a younger child. I still remember. Even through the struggle, my uncle, cousins, aunts, and friends, teachers, played an intrigue part in my success with their up lifting spirits.

PFPN: Q. What are you trying to communicate with your art?

Teaya: A. In my style of writing, I'm trying to communicate the way I move, the way I think, feel and see in life.

PFPN: Q. Would you say that you are fighting for love when writing your spoken word?

Teaya: A. I would say I am fighting for love through my spoken word.  I want you to empathize and connect with me on a deeper level.

PFPN: Q. What is a measure of success as a poet?

Teaya A. The moment I step out of my comfort zone of writing that's when I knew and felt what a great accomplishment I have achieved, and when I say comfort I'm talking about the unspoken words left in my mind. That's how I measure a poet’s success.

PFPN: Q. Who are some of your favorite poets?

Teaya: A. William Shakespeare, Maya Angelou, and Langston Hughes... some of the best writers who work I read many many times.

PFPN: Q. What about this poem (the one published) was special to you or led you to write it?

Teaya: A. My poem was special to me because it stems from a memory I didn't forget, I could remember what place I was in when… I took the time out to write in my words in complete sentences.

PFPN: Q. What makes a poem “good?

Teaya: A. A poem is good when the correct words are used to reflect on the character. A good poem has it going on when the reader can say "yesss that's it”.

PFPN: Q. What advice do you have for aspiring poets?

Teaya: A. The advice I have to give to aspiring poets is, don't give up no matter what.

“The breast of a healthy mother’s milk is the microphone; the picture of the healthy mother breast feeding her child breast food in public is the poetry. Both are a natural expression of beauty and activism, a different style of poetry into the world scene able to heal, appeal, and defend against injustice. If there’s a very simple way of exposing injustice and judging discover the sight of a woman being a loving mother breast feeding her child in public then watch how quick there will be those rising up ready to do her harm-attacking and deciding what should be done to her for exposing a nipple of the woman’s breast for food or even the thought of a nipple of the woman’s breast for pleasure.  Too many people, I mean to say, too many fools - promote the thought that sight of a woman’s nipple in public places is the worst thing imaginable that every female can do. In many countries, they imprison or even plan to imprison women that breast feed in public places don’t they? If a man or woman can’t be imprison just for being a fool that they are no woman should be imprisoned for being a mother feeding breast food to her child in public”. An Interview With Fresh First-Year Top Poet Teaya Downing: Changing The View Of The Poets

As top newspapers and magazines such as the Philadelphia Front Page News have been welcoming new best poetry writers over the past few years, Teaya Downing and other poets have also been adjusting the practice of dropping hot poems for readers.

Teaya Downing and other writers increasingly view labeling poetry as a sexist term that implies young men are the norm among those beginning the poetry life. And poets are not only men anymore.

Publishers and Poets have become more diversified over the years as more non-traditionally aged women, begin their poetry style.

It’s time to do away with the controlled style poetry and begin with the new open style poetry. Teaya, a young mother of 1, is of the new open style poetry writers.

Philadelphia Front Page News: How did you come to write your style of poetry and how long have you taken your style of writing more seriously than writing as a hobby?

Teaya Downing: My style of poetry came from my personal experiences in life. The memories of a 7 year old child, family members, association with professionals and my peers. I've taken my style of writing serious, due to the fact it's my perception of reality.

PFPN: What group of people (teachers, mothers, fathers, singles, etc.) does your poetry appeal to?

Teaya D: The group of people my style of writing appeals to is women, men, teachers, brothers, sisters, cousins, rappers.

PFPN: This past year, how has your poetry encouraged more writing and expressing ones real thoughts to readers? 

Teaya D: My poetry encourage more writing and expressing coming from my heart, mind, and soul, every person I interacted with left me with some common sense that not many have heard.

PFPN: Across the city, what age group do you think are classified as relationship disadvantaged?

Teaya: D: The age group I think are classified as relationship disadvantage will be 16-23 years old. At this age boys and girls are looking for stability and better ways to love them.

PFPN: What caused you to join up with your uncle Van Stone Downing to use poetry to help make a difference in the lives of Black peoples?

Teaya D: What caused me to join with my uncle van stone downing to use poetry to help make a difference in the lives of black people is the unlimited support, love, and knowledge of God. Van stone downing took me through a new walk of life which included faith, hope, luck, love.

PFPN: Do you believe that writing and reading poetry can truly help people find their own voice in their community?

Teaya D:  I believe that writing and reading poetry can truly help people find their own voice in their community. I believe we are looking for ways to connect and poetry gives you new ways to think and feel.

PFPN: What is your next goal to help adults become more involved in an ongoing poetry project? 

Teaya D: My next goal to help adults become more involved in an ongoing poetry project is to get quality writers join an open house venue with some of the biggest leaders.

Philadelphia native Eli Latson’s story is a typical hard work to success story. Eli Latson, a lead community activist in the Philadelphia suburban areas, is a businessman from West Philadelphia and heads his own premier barber team in Lansdowne, Pennsylvania. Latson has a track record of over 15 years working with people interested in business studies.

In 2007, the barbering business in Philadelphia was at its all time high. And Latson adjusted quickly to explore retail marketing endeavors in the U.S. and abroad with several projects and investors representing each project.

However, Eli’s real passion lay in the arts and the community. He’s interested in helping to influence many young people, especially school age children, to be more than a little happy about small improvements being made in the environment.

For many years, Eli Latson has actively supported Van Stone Productions Foundation, after being registered in the foundation for many years as a child.  Latson supports the VSP Foundation, non-profit because of the  foundations history of empowering people with at risk beginnings. Most recently in 2017, he serves as one of the CEO's for the the Van Stone annual youth services activities called After-School and Weekend Programs serving in Philadelphia, PA and its surrounding counties.

Latson also supports his friends' and family's charity events. Many of these charity events involves fund raising, family support group activities and professional sports entertainment.

While he is extremely busy overseeing his professional barber shop work and company business operations Eli Latson has invested much time into youth services, community development and cultural awareness activity.  Most recently he is using fashion modeling and recreation education as a way to becoming more of a role model to youngsters and adult male and female family leaders of the community.
