Phila Front Page News: Family News - Pennsylvania expands food assistance program - SNAP
Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Wolf's administration announced an expansion to the state's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which is known as SNAP, last week.
The change means an additional 420,000 Pennsylvanians will now be eligible for food stamps, according to the Department of Human Services.
Starting on Oct. 1, the Pennsylvania will increase the income threshold for all applicants to 200% of the Federal Poverty Income Guidelines.
"Any opportunity that we have to recognize the continued cost of food, the impact that that has on a family. If I'm making a decision between paying an electric bill or being able to provide for a dinner for my family, you should never have to choose for someone to go hungry," DHS Executive Deputy Secretary Andrew Barnes said.
The monthly income limits for all households to be eligible for SNAP are as follows:
- 1 in household - $2,266
- 2 - $3,052
- 3 - $3,840
- 4 - $4,626
- 5 - $5,412
- 6 - $6,200
- 7 - $6,986
- 8 - $7,772
- 9 - $8,560
- 10 - $9,348
- Each additional member - $788
September is National Hunger Action Month. According to Feeding Pennsylvania, more than two million Pennsylvanians experience chronic hunger and food insecurity every day, including one in seven children.
